Sally Beauty Holdings Case Study: Benefits Get a Makeover

Taking care of employees with non-insured benefits.

Sally Beauty is the world’s largest distributor and retailer of professional beauty products, employing 27,000 full-time and part-time associates across more than 4,000 stores in 11 countries. Inspired by its corporate motto — Be yourself, be part of something bigger — Stacy Juetten, Senior Director of Benefits at Sally Beauty Holdings, was motivated to elevate the company’s benefits package.

She envisioned a solution that included benefits — both traditional and non-insured — that would make a meaningful difference in the health and lives of employees. She also viewed benefits as powerful tools for retaining and recruiting top talent. Stacy partnered with New Benefits to bring this vision to life.

Building a better benefits package, together.

After hearing Stacy’s vision, the New Benefits team got to work — crafting a strategy that combined popular non-insured benefits with innovative solutions like health advocacy and fertility services. “They listen to what your organization needs at the time,” said Stacy. “They actually present and propose new things, new offers, new items they’re seeing in the landscape that they think might help.”

Together, Sally Beauty and New Benefits developed a robust benefits package — one that supplements traditional offerings with a range of valuable non-insured benefits:

  • Health Advocacy
  • Fertility, Surrogacy and Adoption Services
  • Worklife Services
  • Hearing
  • Lab Testing
  • Diagnostic Imaging

Combating the high cost of healthcare with advocacy services.

Rising healthcare costs are a significant concern for both Sally Beauty and its workforce. By integrating health advocacy into its benefits strategy, the company is now able to provide essential support to help employees navigate the healthcare system, maximize their benefits and work to reduce healthcare expenses.

Adding health advocates has been a winning strategy for Sally Beauty. “We’ve had so many individuals with medical expenses who have contacted health advocates and have had those costs decreased by thousands of dollars,” reports Stacy.

Making a difference with new fertility, surrogacy and adoption benefits.

Another innovative solution that Sally Beauty added to its growing benefits portfolio is fertility, surrogacy and adoption services. Since infertility affects one in eight couples, offering these resources has become a meaningful way to support employees through challenging times.

“One particular employee was going through IVF. She and her husband had been trying to plan a family for a decade and could not conceive. They came to us and asked if we had any services we could offer — and we did,” says Stacy.

Thanks to this new offering, the HR team connected the employee with a fertility consultant who provided guidance, helped her find a physician and uncovered services at a discounted rate. “I’m happy to report that they have conceived a child and are due in November,” Stacy adds.

Bringing benefits together with one simple app.

For most companies, helping employees understand and utilize their benefits is an ongoing challenge. In retail, this challenge is even greater due to the unique nature of the workforce. “We have a huge part-time staff without regular access to email or a computer, but they all have a cellphone,” says Stacy.

That’s where the New Benefits app comes into play. It allows Sally Beauty employees to access their benefits — right on their smartphones. “Even though we have various benefits from various vendors, it’s all in one app,” adds Stacy. The app includes information and ID cards for the company’s health, dental and vision plans, plus access to information about non-insured benefits, too.

Sally Beauty also customized the app with its logo and colors — creating a cohesive, branded experience for employees. Now, the HR team uses the app to introduce benefits, share news and provide timely updates. “The mobile app has been huge,” Stacy notes. “We use it as our main channel for everyone, both full-time and part-time.”
