Job Summary:

The IT Product Owner The Product Owner (PO) is a member of the Agile Team responsible for defining Stories, and prioritizing team backlog to streamline the execution of program priorities while maintaining the conceptual and technical integrity of the Features or components for the team. The PO has a significant role in maximizing the value produced by the team and ensuring Stories meet the user’s needs. This is a critical role which has significant relationships and responsibilities inside and outside the IT team, including working with Vendor Relations/Product Management, Business Owners, and other stakeholders to name a few.

Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with prospective team members, users and clients to understand and anticipate their needs and translate them into product requirements
  • Define the vision for the team’s product
  • Create a product road map based on this vision
  • Manage the product backlog and prioritize them based on changing requirements
  • Oversee all stages of product creation including design and development
  • Develop user stories
  • Monitor and evaluate product progress at each stage of the process
  • Work with the product team and end-users to deliver updates
  • Participate in Scrum meetings and product sprints

Preparation and Participation in PI Planning

  • Update the team backlog; and review and contribute to the program vision, roadmap, and content presentations
  • Story definition-provide the clarifications necessary to assist the team with their story estimates and sequencing. (The entire Agile team, which includes the PO, also work together to determine their team PI objectives for the upcoming PI.)

Iteration Execution

  • Maintain the team backlog – With input from System Architect/Engineering and other stakeholders, the PO has the primary responsibility for building, editing, and maintaining the team backlog. Consisting mostly of user stories, it also includes defects and enablers. Backlog items are prioritized based on user value, time, and other team dependencies determined in the PI planning event and refined during the PI.
  • Iteration Planning – Review and reprioritize the backlog as part of the prep work for Iteration Planning, including coordination of dependencies with other POs. During the iteration planning event, the PO communicates story detail and priorities and ensures the team aligns and agrees on a final iteration plan.
  • Just-in-time story elaboration – Most backlog items are elaborated into user stories for implementation. This may happen before the iteration, during iteration planning, or during the iteration. While any team member can write stories and acceptance criteria, the PO maintains proper flow.
  • Apply Behavior-Driven Development – Collaborate with their team to detail stories with acceptance criteria and examples in the form of acceptance tests.
  • Accept stories – Work with the team to agree on accepted story completion. This includes validating that the story meets acceptance criteria, that it has the appropriate, persistent acceptance tests, and that it otherwise complies with its Definition of Done.
  • Understand enabler work
  • Participate in team demo and retrospective – Collaborate with team and any other stakeholders in the team demo; and participate in the Iteration Retrospective, where the teams gather to improve their processes.

Qualifications and Skills Required:

  • Minimum of 3 years as an IT Product Owner
  • In-depth knowledge of Scrum and Agile Software Development Methodology
  • Working knowledge of product development architecture
  • Proficiency in the use of analytic tools
  • Ability to prioritize effectively
  • Excellent knowledge of user-centered design principles
  • Excellent oral and written communication
  • Ability to work with large teams
  • Understanding of design quality standards
  • 3-5 years of experience creating user stories and customer acceptance criteria to allow rapid developer understanding, effort sizing, and implementation
  • Must be an excellent listener with strong verbal communication and technical writing skills
  • Must be familiar with Agile development practices to allow effective introduction of requirements into the process
  • Must be skilled as a client advocate to accelerate product development and support team members including architects, designers, testers, customer acceptance leads, product release managers and support
  • 3-5 years of hosting agile product backlog creation, refinement, prioritization, and sprint planning
  • Must be a self-starter, initiating the requirement gathering, organizing and delivery process
  • Must be able to perform work at a computer terminal for 6-8 hours, and function in an environment with interruptions
  • Preferred: 2-3 years of working in a SAFe environment
  • Strong written and verbal communications skills
  • Ability to talk or hear, both in person and by telephone
  • Good visual acuity
  • Capable of lifting up to 25 pounds

Preferred:

  • Bachelors Degree in Computer Science or technology related field preferred
